And for cosy mysteries, I find the Daisy Dalrymple series by Carola Dunn to be fun and sweet but with a bit more substance than other "cosies". The first one is Death at Wentwater Court. Or you could just read something like Miss Marple if you haven't already - that might count too. Maybe the short stories, The Thirteen Problems or something like The Moving Finger or A Murder Is Announced (or whatever their US titles are; US publishers seemed to be really into changing Golden Age detective story titles!)
Retelling a classic - why don't you see what your library has that is a fairy tale retelling of some kind, as there are loads. If you Google something like "book retellings of fairy tales" or classics, you get loads of recommended lists and you could see what takes your fancy. Fantasy authors are very fond of using fairy & folk tales - things like Beauty by Robin McKinley or Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik or comic children's revisionist tales even.
