One of my goals this year is be more active in my comms here, so I figured it's time to update here.

Just Read-  Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars novelization.  I'm doing a Reading Challenge thanks to the library here, and this counts as Set in the FUTURE.  I really enjoyed this novelization.  It's good when the Target books are more than just word for word of the episodes, and give actual backstory and insight.

Reading Now-  Marvel 1602 by Neil Gaiman.  Recommended by [personal profile] shivver !  :)   So far, this is an interesting comic .  It's not just transplanting the Marvel characters into the 1600s ;  it actually builds on the world (and incorporates actual historical events)

Reading Next-  Not sure; either the Wild Blue Yonder Target books or Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever (Jeff Kinney).

Current Listening:  Doctor Who :  Dalek Universe 2 .  I enjoyed the first set of this series.  It's exciting and whoever wrote these just *gets* the Tenth Doctor.  His dialogue is perfect.  :)

Eragon by Christopher Paolini-   So... Tumblr reminded me the film version of this book exists. :P  I do plan to rewatch it,  but I wanted to check out the original book.  It's actually a well-written,  pretty vivid fantasy world.

Writing:  I did two fics for @tardis_festivities, and finally got around to posting something I wrote last year ( for a OUaT event ) to AO3.  Links are below!

Yeah... I'm better now.  I'm still here (and on Tumblr).

I passed my class with an A (on my final and my research paper) and in the process learned I can do hard things.

I just feel like writing (and reading ) all the things right now.

<small> Starting with my Christmas in July cared, which I do plan to at least start, and don't mind ideas for. Might not do all of them .

 ( <---- This user keeps saying she'll make new icons but doesn't :P )

1.  Hope everyone had a good Christmas! We celebrate normally on Christmas Eve.  I got among other things: three new books (one DW, a Disney one called When You Wish Upon a Star, and something new called School For Extraterrestrial Girls).   Also, authentic candy from the UK and Switzerland.  I haven't tried the latter yet,  but I gotta ask: People in the UK, why is your chocolate so good???

Reading: A Christmas Carol- the actual novel.  I'm pretty sure I've read it before for school but wanted to read it again,  Reading next I;m not really sure.

Listening: Welcome to Our Village Please Invade Carefully.  Thanks to [personal profile] lurking_latinist and [personal profile] thisbluespirit.  This series is amazing and hilarious!

Watching:  Call the Midwife (with second mom,  we're up to series 3 or 4 I think ).  This is wonderful and one of the most pure shows I've ever seen.  You will probably cry theough.  Also, Jane Eyre: the 2000s version.  I know [personal profile] shivver and [personal profile] thisbluespirit have seen me squee about this adaptation but so far it's enjoyable.  The characters are great and I really want to see where this goes.  As for DW, I haven't seen the Christmas episode yet but for the 60th specials...

The Star Beast was good but I have questions.
Wild Blue Yonder was awesome
Same with The Giggle (and I won't ruin the ending, but if you don't know about it by now... )

3.   I managed to do a Christmas fic:  https://archiveofourown.org/works/52565044
And this one I wrote for TARDIS Festivities: https://archiveofourown.org/works/51677746

(wow there's several fics I've done lately I need to link here)

4.  Somebody really needs to keep me away from the Genremixer....

Come on, lets post today….!

(Note: This is going to be a long entry; partly due to it also being my way of practicing nonfiction writing)

First,  let me begin by saying Happy Labor Day to everyone in the US - including myself.  I hope you are having a wonderful day and hopefully relaxing.

And now onto the rest of this…

What I Am Reading-  It has actually been over a month , I’m sorry to admit,  since I have read an actual book.   Before that,  I did read Burger and Dies (yes, that is  the actual title) by Maisy Marple.  Something you may not know about me is that for a couple of years now, I have become a fan of cozy mysteries.   This author’s in particular.   I do not know why, whether it’s the breezy, short length or the plots and usually smaller locales and quirky punny titles, but these are pretty fun to read.  This last one was a bit different ( beginning of a new series,  protagonist is male and a food vlogger as opposed to normal where it’s a woman who runs a cafe or a reporter) but still enjoyable.

What I’m Reading Next-  Apart from binge reading the works of poorobscureplainandlittle over on AO3 ,  I recently acquired a free copy of the novelization of Frozen. Having not seen the film in its entirety (though oddly enough, it’s the basis for one of my favorite OUAT story arcs),  I feel like this could be my introduction before I watch it.

What I Am Listening To-  Lately I’ve been going through the Sixth Doctor’s recent audios- the boxsets that began last year with his new team.  In order, they are: Water Worlds, Purity Undreamed, Purity Unbound ( honestly my favorite so far),  and now Purity Unbound.   I do love Six and his current team of Mel and Hebe and the dynamic of the three of them.  And this isn’t a spoiler, but I admit that the final story of the second set made me literally cry.

Also,   I am currently on a family trip to Myrtle Beach (South Carolina) and found this podcast last week made by LibreVox that’s just reading classic novels.  So on my way here , I listened to the first seven chapters of Pride and Prejudice ( not bad but hard to follow and understand), then switched over to Big Finish,  then went back and got through the first twelve chapters of Jules Verne ( which I somewhat preferred )

And one more thing-  Last night, we had dinner over at my aunt’s house so got to see my uncle, cousin and her two kids (a 6 year old and an almost-toddler), and a few others.  The TV was on Finding Dory and Tangled for the kids and this one particular song from the soundtrack (When Will my Life begin) has been stuck in my head all day.  :P

What I Am Watching-   Apart from rewatching some Doctor Who and OUAT,  I watched the ( possibly obscure,  hard to tell) pilot special for the ‘90s X-Men cartoon.   I have

[personal profile] apachefirecat

  and

[personal profile] shivver

to thank for my curiosity about this series.   My opinion is simple:  it’s not bad ,   but it *is* a pilot. But if you can make me care about the main POV character (in this case, Kitty Pryde) in about 30 minutes, you’re doing something right!

What I am Playing-  I’ve been playing a LOT of Pokemon Shining Pearl on my Switch lately.  It’s a very fun game in a way that’s hard to describe.  My first actual Pokemon game (I played GO during its heyday though).   If anyone cars or is interested, favorite mons are Piplup, Ponyta, Clefairy, Pachirisu, and Shinx.

What I am Writing-  I completed two (2) fics for justmarriedex. Now I am waiting for the Reveals- which as of now are in two days due to some delay.   I have two current WIPs- an OUAT one that’s planned and mostly written, but not finished and a DW that’s still in planning.  I was saying recently I’m a pantser slowly turning into a planner.

romanajo123: Belle from Once Upon a Time episode Skin Deep (ouat belle)
 1.  Trip was great! We got home Thursday afternoon.

2.  [personal profile] shivver  and I have been talking about "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead" (DW) lately.   I may do a formal post later but honestly my thoughts are it's enjoyable.  Not for everyone but I like the concept a lot and the ending is kind of depressing. Also she has actually inspired me! So expect a ficlet soon

3.  I FINALLY posted my fills for GenPrompt Bingo 13 I completed a few years ago.  (I ended up with a Line, and a few extra). And I'm glad, been meaning to .

4.   So on my way home on Thursday,  I was talking to my cousin on messages.  And... this happened.

Me- Can I give a quick recommendation? Once Upon a Time.  I binge watched and I'm in the proverbial rabbit hole
Her: Oh I love that show
Me: Isn't it great? <smile>  Who's your favorite?
Her- Robin hood

5.   I've been thinking about the Cake Fic Meme recently.  And going through the AO3 tag .  The meme is such a weird and simple concept but it works and is honestly hilarious.  ( essentially "Character A and B, tied /chained to a wall, covered in cake"  Sometimes, ahem,  in a bit of undress but it's normally played for humor/crack)  .  Here's a generator if you need some examples-  http://www.seasip.info/Misc/cakerpg.html
Now the question is,  how can I work cake fic into OUAT? :)

6.  Have a meme!

1.Give me a list of two or more characters (same fandom, multiple fandoms, whatever, it's up to you, doesn't have to be a shared fandom, just whoever you want to write).
2.I'll use them to generate you 3 prompts from the Genremixer!
3. Go write tropey flashfic from any or all of them & link back here.

All profit with ficlets and drabbles! Or at the very least, amusing prompts to contemplate. \o/

 1.   I'm currently in Myrtle Beach (SC).   Staying in  my aunt's house,  she is on a trip to Australia so we're house sitting.  And it is WAY too hot here !!  :/

2.   Went to BAM !  (Books a Million ) yesterday and had to ... actually stop myself from buying about 10 books and a POP! figure of Elsa from Frozen.   I settled on 5 books all from this series I've been looking forward to.  :  https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/a-twisted-tale
Thanks to [personal profile] shivver  I've been inspired to read Pride and Prejudice recently... which unfortunately was one I put back.

3.   I've discovered two new comms thanks to [personal profile] thisbluespirit that are both OUAT on here!! One actually informed me about a deleted scene that I now wish was left in.

4.  Beignets.   I tried some today for the first time and actually got a takeout order of them.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beignet   Basically they taste like little donuts or funnelcake.  :)

5.  Writing has been... interesting? lately.   I'm currently in an online class on Advanced Fiction Writing.  With the same teacher I had in my last class (Write Fiction Like a pro).   And the last time he used the Wizard of Oz as an example.  This class? Beauty and the Beast.  And given my current interests,  ... I'm starting to wonder if he's just trying to tease me/ get me to unintentionally squee!  I did do a Drabble a few days ago and am about to start on my gift for Just Married.  (DW,  not sure if it's going to be 10/Donna or 11/River)

6.  If anyone is following Big Finish's Once and Future,  the third release just came out: A Genius for War.  And as of now I haven't listened to it/

^Yes. That was more or less my reaction when the doctor at post op took off the eye patch this morning :P
Everything went great! We are praising God. I can already tell a big difference.
There's things like eye drops I have to use and this...shield thing I wear to sleep. But other than that everything went fine. Thanks everyone for your thoughts/prayers.

Super excited because according to the weather report, tonight we could get between 6 & 18 inches ( .46 meters) of snow!!

I love snow , especially watching it fall.

Mysteries!!

I started an online class today that’s on Mystery Writing. And now I’m kind of ( very) excited. I loved Nancy Drew/ Hardy Boys books a lot in middle school and recently discovered “ cozy mysteries “ . And , does catching part of Miss Marple on PBS or watching Ghostwriter as a kid count for anything? 😊

I’m curious: what are some of your fave mysteries? ( Any medium)
romanajo123: (Default)
Worms? Cats? Is there something other than bookworm? :P

The library here is doing a Winter Reading Bingo. ( I don’t know how to add pictures or I’d post my card) Basically like regular Bingo except you read a book for each square. Things like Fantasy, A Childhood Favorite ( which I’m reading now ),Book with a Green/ Red/ Blue Cover, Graphic novel, By a Local Author, etc.

Only problem is, I may need help or recommendations for a few things.

A Quirky Family
Book “ Everyone “ Has Read
A Strong Female Character
Retelling a classic
Cozy mystery

Reading!!
romanajo123: (Default)
So how was your Christmas? Mine was great! Spent it in Virginia with family. I thought I’d try doing one of these things.

READING-  13 Doctors 13 Stories. A collection of short stories originally released by Puffin in 2013 for the 50th, this version adds two more stories. Each story is by a different author, and the ones I’ve read seem to range from “ this was really cool!” to “ this was... just okay.”  Also I got a copy of The Doctor Who Dangerous Book of Monsters for Christmas:)

LISTENING:   Doctor Who: Free Speech & The Grey Man of the Mountains, both from Big Finish. The latter is the first monthly range release I’ve bought in a while and it’s excellent so far. Seven, Ace, The Brigadier., a yeti... what more could you want? The former may require a second listen since I’m having a hard time getting into it.

WATCHING- Doctor Who s4 & SJA. I forgot how much I loved 10 & Donna. And while I haven’t seen all of SJA, I’m definitely enjoying it.

Into the Labyrinth. This is a series I only recently learned about ( though apparently it aired over here in the 80s?) I’m not super far in but it’s fascinating enough to keep me interested. If you can deal with 70s / 80s Who you would probably enjoy it  Here’s a summary    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Into_the_Labyrinth_(TV_series)

( WRITING- .... uhhhhh...)

So,
Thanks to a friend I am slowly falling into Terry Pratchett's Discworld universe (side note: I don't own any of the books yet). I'm super excited????

I'm starting with the adaptation of Soul Music now

Well, today I finally watched the new episode of Doctor Who.  And...so far,  I'm kinda impressed.  I like Bill and can't wait to see more of her and Twelve's dynamic.
Also, I watched the first episode of Class. (after hearing about it for months)  I liked it.  More than I thought I would initially. (My *second mom* ((stepmom but I don't like that word)) watched it and we both want to see where this series goes!))  As of now, I have no clue who my favorite character will be.

I now have a WIP notebook (it's pretty much a journal I picked up at B&N which holds any prompts/ideas so I don't lose them or until I figure out an exact outline).

Since my dream/bucket list is to write a YA novel, I've kind of taken a bit of a break from fic writing to work on improving writing/grammar / some reading via using two different workbooks.  It's helped me realize I need to not only work on grammar and adding detail, but also actually plan things out so my work isn't stuck in indefinite hiatus.

Also,  have a ficlet meme I borrowed from [personal profile] thisbluespirit

Take a pairing (or two or more characters), and put them in this random generator, then post your favourite resulting prompts (as many as you wish) in a comment below and I will try to oblige you by writing at least one of them.
